Austin is one of the few American cities where renting a supercar makes sense as a driving decision rather than a photography decision. Within forty minutes of downtown you are on roads that were laid over limestone hills by people who were not thinking about grid layouts. Here are the four routes worth the rental, how long each takes, the right car for each, and the mileage you need to book so the day does not end with a surprise on the invoice.
The Devil's Backbone (Ranch Road 32)
The famous one, and it earns it. Roughly 25 miles of ridgeline between Wimberley and Blanco, with long sightlines in both directions and a genuine sense of elevation, which is unusual in Texas. About an hour from central Austin to the eastern end via Dripping Springs. Best at either end of the day; the overlook is a standard stop and gets busy at sunset. Plan for: a half day with lunch in Wimberley, about 120 miles round trip.
The Three Sisters (Ranch Roads 335, 336 and 337)
The serious one. A loop through Medina, Vanderpool and Leakey, roughly 100 miles of continuous curves, elevation change and almost no traffic. Motorcyclists come from other states for it. It is about two hours west of Austin before you even start the loop, which makes it a full day out, and the best driving in Texas by a clear margin. Plan for: a full day, 300 or more miles round trip. Tell us when you book so the mileage allowance is set correctly.
Willow City Loop
Thirteen miles of narrow, twisting road northeast of Fredericksburg, through a private ranching valley. In late March and April it runs through bluebonnets and it is one of the most photographed drives in the state. It is genuinely narrow, cattle have right of way, and stopping is restricted: this is a drive-through, not a picnic spot. Plan for: combine with Fredericksburg for a day trip, about 90 minutes each way and 180 miles round trip.
Loop 360 and Ranch Road 2222
The evening option when you do not have a whole day. Loop 360, the Capital of Texas Highway, gives you the Pennybacker Bridge overlook ten minutes from downtown, the classic Austin car photograph. Link it with Ranch Road 2222 and Ranch Road 620 along Lake Travis for an hour of proper road without leaving the metro. Plan for: 60 to 90 minutes, ideal for the first evening of a rental, inside the standard mileage allowance.
Which car for which road, and what it costs
For the Three Sisters and the Devil's Backbone, something with suspension travel and usable ground clearance: the BMW M3 or M4 Competition, the Porsche 911 GT3, which is the best car in the fleet on these roads, or the Corvette C8, which is quicker than most of what you will meet and far more comfortable over a long day than people expect. The McLaren 570S and the Lotus Emira are the two for people who want the steering above everything. For Loop 360 at golden hour and for Willow City in bluebonnet season, take the convertible: the Huracán EVO Spyder or the 911 Targa. A very low exotic on an unfamiliar ranch road in fading light is the one combination worth avoiding. For a group, the Lamborghini Urus does the Devil's Backbone with four people and a cooler.

Mileage: the one thing to get right
Every rental has a daily allowance, and in Austin people use it. The Devil's Backbone is about 120 miles round trip from downtown, Fredericksburg about 180, the Three Sisters 300 or more. Tell us the route when you book and we set the allowance to match. Miles bought up front are always cheaper than overage afterwards, and this is the single most common way people end up with a bill they did not expect.
Practical notes
Fuel stops thin out fast west of Dripping Springs: fill up before you commit to a loop. Phone signal is patchy through Medina and Vanderpool. Deer are a genuine hazard at dawn and dusk across the whole region, which is the real reason to drive these roads in daylight. Low-water crossings on the ranch roads flood after storms; if it has rained hard, check before you go. And the Willow City Loop is private land: no stopping in the road, no climbing fences for the photograph.
Making it a weekend
If you are in town for the Grand Prix, SXSW or ACL, add a day either side and drive one of these. Late October and late March are the two best windows of the year for it. Three days or more takes about 15% off the daily rate, which usually covers the extra day.

International licences are accepted with a passport; tell us in advance so we can confirm before you fly rather than at the curb.
