Ormond calls itself the birthplace of speed for a reason. In the first years of the automobile the hard-packed sand between Ormond and Daytona was where people came to see how fast a car could go, long before there was a Speedway. That history is the reason the town still feels like it was built around the car, and the reason a Corvette C8 or a Huracán Spyder looks right parked on Granada Boulevard. You will not be timing anything on the beach today, and you should not take one of these cars on the sand at all, but the roads that lead away from it are better than anything in central Florida.
The Ormond Scenic Loop
The Loop is the reason to rent something with the roof off. From Granada Boulevard you head north on the river side along Old Dixie Highway, under a canopy of live oaks, past Tomoka State Park and the marsh, then come back down on the beach side with the dunes on one hand and the ocean on the other. It is a slow road, not a fast one, and that is the point: shade, water and very little traffic on a weekday morning. A 911 Targa with the roof panel stowed, the Spyder with the top down, or the Corvette with the targa top in the frunk are the three cars that suit it best. Plan two hours with a stop, and do it early or late when the light is low and the road is empty.
